Benefit
Concert for Alejandro Escovedo
Following a show in Phoenix on April 26, 2003, acclaimed
singer-songwriter and playwright Alejandro Escovedo collapsed and was
hospitalized due to complications from Hepatitis C. He is currently at
home in Texas, resting and undergoing treatment to alleviate the
effects of his condition. Alejandro's rigorous touring schedule and
recording
sessions for a new album that had begun the week before are both on
hold as he recuperates. There is no health insurance to cover the
mounting medical bills and loss of income as Alejandro continues to
pursue treatment. In response to an outpouring of concern from
friends, fans, and associates from across the nation, a trust has been
established to
handle donations on his behalf.
Trinity House Theatre is joining forces
with whfr.fm, 89.3FM in Dearborn, to host a benefit concert for
Alejandro. Artists joining us include Jo Serrapere, Jill Jack, Chris
Buhalis, and Penumbrae.
Jo Serrapere's diverse style fuses elements of modern and traditional
folk music, Delta blues, swing, and rock. She has released two CD's
including a live recording with her band, Jo Serrapere and the Willie
Dunns. Some highlights include a recent performance on Garrison
Keillor's radio program, A Prairie Home Companion.
Born and raised in the metro Detroit area, Jill Jack has been singing
all her life, from church choirs to session work, to starting to write
her own songs and put together her own band – all the while juggling
those creative juices with the average, everyday American's life of
work and family. Her latest CD, Love Hotel was released in 2001.
Chris Buhalis is not only a songwriter, but an accomplished performer;
having appeared on radio's Acoustic Cafe and performing live at such
venerable and respected venues as the Ark in Ann Arbor, MI. Chris also
recorded with the legendary Townes Van Zandt who makes a vocal
appearance on Chris' debut CD, Kenai Dreams.
Formed in 2002, Penumbrae have built a collection of unique original
songs ranging from folk to pop, rock to bluegrass. Influenced by the
likes of Blind Melon, Tori Amos, Patty Larkin, REM and many others,
they've performed throughout the Detroit area including shows at The
Magic Bag and Xhedos Cafe.
