Could
This Be Love
COULD THIS BE LOVE is comprised of six comic vignettes by
award-winning local playwrights Kitty Dubin and Kim Carney, in which
an assortment of
contemporary characters are determined to do whatever it takes to find
love.
In THE JOY OF SEX, a newly married couple seeks to rekindle their
rapidly fading passion with the help of an inept therapist. ALONE
TOGETHER looks
at two strangers in a restaurant whose search for love becomes
intertwined. SKIN DEEP concerns a divorced woman's attempt to
jump-start her love life through plastic surgery. In MESSAGES two
answering machines chronicle the development of an unusual
relationship. BYE BYE LOVE explores the relationship between two women
who meet at a funeral home and their connection with the departed. In
MELTDOWN, a steamy encounter sours
when the participants' true motives are gradually revealed.
Four actors play thirteen different roles in this funny and poignant
evening.
Kim Carney's work has appeared throughout Michigan, as well as on both
coasts. Her most recent full-length play, THE HOME TEAM, will be
produced at the Phoenix Theatre in Indianapolis in May, as well as at
the Performance Network in Ann Arbor next fall. Other productions
include MAGGIE ROSE, which was recently staged at New Jersey Repertory
Theatre and at the Performance Network, LABOR DAY, ONLY ME AND YOU and
NOONER at the Purple Rose Theatre, PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORIES (at the
Boarshead Theatre in Lansing), BOMBSHELLS (also at the Boarshead, as
well as The Theatre Company at University of Detroit), LIFE IS A BEACH
(Millenium Theatre, Southfield), and I LOVE CHRISTMAS (1515 Broadway,
Detroit). LIB was produced at the Planet Ant in Hamtramck and at the
Friends and Artists Theatre in Los Angeles, where it earned six
DramaLogue awards. A
graduate of Wayne State University, Carney received its 1998 Arts
Achievement Award."
Kitty Dubin is an award winning playwright who also teaches
playwriting at Oakland University.
Her one act play, MIMI AND ME, was first runner up in the Turnip
Theatre 15 Minute Playwriting Festival in New York City. TOUGH AS
NAILS, another one act, was a semi-finalist in the same competition
the following year. MIMI AND ME was also selected for production by
the American Playwrights Theatre in NYC.
She has also been a recipient of two individual artist grants in
playwriting for the Michigan Council for the Arts and is a frequent
guest speaker at writer's conferences and various educational
institutions.
